Hi, Esther: Have you tried Kangaroo Care? It is amazing stuff! Just
yesterday, I was ready to leave (half an hour after I told my kids I'd be
home) and one of the nurses came up to me with a screaming 5 hour old baby
in arms - she was practically in tears herself. Seems baby was just
screaming at breast, just could not get baby on, after almost an hour of
trying. By now, poor mom was in tears. I stripped baby down to the diaper
and laid her on mom's bare chest, while explaining skin-to-skin to the
parents. Within minutes baby had calmed, was rooting, and bobbing towards
breast. I encouraged mom to slide baby to the nipple she was bobbing
towards, and lo and behold, baby self-attached and was still happily
nursing 10 minutes later. We all forget that babies are programmed to know
what to do and that breastfeeding is baby-led, not mom or other adult-led.
