April 2004 Parents magazine, page 74, under Kids' Health & Safety has a blurb
entitled
"Iron Up, Baby."
It reads:
"If you give your infant extra iron during her first year you may improve her
cognitive, emotional, and motor development, as well as help prevent anemia,
says a study from the Center for Human Growth and Development at the
University of Michigan. For breastfed babies, the American Academy of Pediatrics
suggests you supplement with iron drops at 4 to 6 months. For formula-fed infants,
use an iron-fortified brand. Once Your baby starts solid foods, introduce
iron sources like iron-fortified infant cereal, pureed meat and mashed veggies."
It appears to me that the magazine has made their own assumptions as to the
AAP's suggestion regarding iron supplementations in infants under 6 months of
age. The AAP's Policy Statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk
recommends in their feeding practices # 7; "In the first 6 months, water, juice,
and other foods are generally unnecessary for breastfed infants.105,106
Vitamin D and iron may need to be given before 6 months of age in selected groups of
infants (vitamin D for infants whose mothers are vitamin D-deficient or those
infants not exposed to adequate sunlight; iron for those who have low iron
stores or anemia)."
You can email the editor to suggest they set the record straight by logging
