On this issue of the USBC and it's member organizations, I want to add a
word here. I attended a conference in Nashville, TN some years ago put
on by BSC that was in the very early days of BFHI in the US. Some of
the info gained there has proven invaluable to me in working to bring
about changes within the hospital. (Of course, it hasn't always been
successful, but it is still valid!) One outline that was particularly
useful was Creating Change in the Face of Resistance and they integrated
breastfeeding promotion into Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People. The main point that stuck with me (and that is the
reason I'm posting it) is that you have to involve everyone at the table
in order to effect change. You must include "those doing the change,
and those being changed" in order to gain commitment. If the only ones
at the table are those who agree with us, how will we get anywhere? We
are all familiar with the concept of losing a battle in order to win the
war and, indeed, we have all probably experienced it in this endeavor.
This is the same concept. We must involve those who both need to change
and can create the change we think is needed, since we obviously can't
do it by ourselves (or we would have.) That means we must deal with
organizations and groups whose policies we don't exactly like, but that
is precisely why they must be included!

I applaud those among us who are effecting change by doing just this,
who can do what needs to be done and deal with whomever it takes because
they are keeping the end in mind (another Stephen Covey principle!),
while still maintaining their/our principles. That truly takes talent!
Marsha
