Valerie said, a few weeks ago, "I don't believe this
is true because in Africa very few hiv-infected
mothers
are being treated before delivery. Pregnancy and
delivery are responsible for
most of the transmission of hiv/aids from mother to
child. Does treatment
negate the mode of transmission? If one has to treat
for transmission, then I
would suggest that pregnancy and delivery are still
the major routes of hiv
transmission. This statement is a distortion and a
disfavor to breastfeeding"

valerie, this came up today at a child care facility
at a city recreation center. I commented that
universal precautions do not apply to human milk and
the "lead" told me that in Colorado they do. I told
her that according the the CDC they dont' because
transmission of HIV is highly unlikely whilst feeding
a baby with expressed human milk- and since I have a
latex allergy, wearing gloves may present a greater
risk. The "lead" told me that it didn't matter
because her OSHA provided book tells her that most HIV
transmission from mother-baby is via breastmilk- I
quickly updated her on the hazards of mixed feedings
to babies, but would like your sources from above, if
you have them.

this matters because this woman is in contact with
many mothers regularly and can color their attitudes
toward breastfeeding. I've already gotten the sense
that she is does not know much about breastfeeding and
really don't want her to pass on any more
misinformation.
