>Um...how many children die due to sleeping in cribs? I haven't heard anyone
>telling us to toss out cribs immediately because "even a few deaths are
>enough to warn against crib-sleeping".
a quick google search revealed the answer to your question:
Each year 64 baby deaths occur year in adult beds, and over 2,000 babies die
alone in their cribs.
sources:
SIDS deaths<http://www.sidscenter.org/SIDSFACT.HTM>
Each year between 1983 and 1992, the average number of reported SIDS deaths
ranged from 5,000 to 6,000. Over the past few years, especially since the
mid 1990s, the number of SIDS deaths has declined significantly. The
National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reported that in 2001 in the
United States, 2,236 infants under 1 year of age died from SIDS (NCHS,
2003). Still, when considering the number of live births each year, SIDS
remains the leading cause of death in the United States among infants
between 1 month and 1 year of age and the third leading cause of death
overall among infants less than 1 year of age (NCHS, 2003).
co-sleeping deaths <http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml99/99175.html>
CPSC Warns Against Placing Babies in Adult Beds; Study finds 64 deaths each
year from suffocation and strangulation. A review of incident data from
January 1990 to December 1997 linked adult beds to at least 515 baby deaths.
(This warning about the dangers of co-sleeping came from the CPSC - the
Consumer Product Safety Commission - who manufacture cribs.)
