Here is a patent "application" regarding DHA. If it becomes a patent we,
IBCLCs, will have to "understand, recognize, respect and acknowledge" it as
directed by our code of ethics. One of the inventors is Eileen Birch--she did
the DHA research that was so persuasive regarding the need for DHA
supplementation for infants.
Patent application # 20040048926
"Use of docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid to enhance the visual
development of term infants breast-fed up to the age of six months."
Inventors: Hoffman, Dennis Robert (Dallas, TX); Birch, Eileen Elizabeth

The US Government has a paid up license to this invention--so it has an
investment in it, too! Yes, "babies were born to be breastfed" and given DHA. In
what form is this DHA supplement given? You'all guessed it-- infant formula
for the breastfed term infant. Yes, isn't the support of the US Government for
breastfeeding just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And isn't it just wonderful
that when this patent application becomes a patent we IBCLCs will be dancing to
the tune of understanding, recognition, respect, and acknowledgement.
Valerie W. McClain, who seems to have misplaced her IBCLC credentials in all
the hurricanes......
