Arly and all who commented on this topic,

Thank you so much for your comments on WIC and cereal at 4 months. I, too,
expressed my concerns regarding the puzzling practice (i.e., absurdity) of
WIC providing vouchers for cereal at 4 months, back during my years with
West Virginia WIC from 1995-2000. Yes, it is contradictory to WIC's
client teaching, which makes for precious time wasted in presenting the
client/learner with the interesting experience of cognitive dissonance.

Providing a learning environment mired in cognitive dissonance does not
enhance a valuable learning experience, and in this situation, most
certainly contributes to lower duration rates of exclusive breastfeeding.
WIC breastfeeding advocates work hard to improve the wellbeing of all
mothers and babies who are served by this program. This work could be
enhanced by NOT providing WIC cereal vouchers for infants at the
inappropriate age of 4 months.

To National WIC breastfeeding advocates: Now that we are approaching the
end of 2004, will you please respond?
