Our infection control people recommended Joy soap simply because it contains
a little alcohol. We tried to get sample sizes also with no success. We
pour some from a large bottle into a specimen bottle, then put on a peel and
stick label made up with the product name and the basic cautions (don't
ingest it, keep it out of your eyes). We would date the time we filled the
specimen bottle. Each mom had her own, so they weren't in use long enough
to have to worry about "expiration" time or "cross contamination". This
approach met the Hazmat (hazardous materials) committee requirements.

One day our supervisor came by and noticed one of the specimen bottles with
the soap on it sitting in the cubicle outside a patient room. Before she
was told what it was, she started to rant about "how could someone so
carelessly leave a urine specimen out like that!"

Before they changed to the molded plastic containers for the pump kits, we
liked to recommend using the "box" as a dishpan so moms weren't washing the
pump parts where everyone was washing hands. The newer ones still work, but
are more awkward.

Winnie
