Vitamin E can be toxic in excessive
amounts as well. The same ethical rules that apply to drug studies should
apply to studies of the safety of megadoses of vitamins.
Dear Friends:
There was a time where mothers were told to apply Vitamin E, obtained
from piercing a capsule, to their nipples as a soreness relief measure. A study
investigating the efficacy and safety of this was halted, as the babies' blood
levels of Vitamin E went up 40% and no one could say that was safe.
Another worry about Vitamin E is that it often comes from sources known
to be allergenic, such as wheat germ oil or soy.
Another point about megadoses of vitamins is that excess of the water
soluable vitamins is peed away; I have heard it said that people in the USA have
the most expensive urine in the world.
