Hello! My name is Erica Gourneau and I am a nursing student attending the
University of North Dakota. I am very interested in the subject of breast
feeding and have been reading entries and archives for past few weeks. I was
particularly interested in the use of galactagogues and the preterm
infants. In my research on the subject, I found many studies that cite the
importance of breast milk for preterm and critically ill newborns due to
its effect of improved enterel feeding and developmental/neurocognitive
outcomes. (Henderson,2003). Domperidone increased milk supply without
significant amounts of the drug being ingested by the infant (da Silva,
Knoppert, Angelini, & Forret, 2001) as opposed to other drugs such as
metoclopramide. I haven't found any studies that cite contraindications for
this drug and am wondering why it is not approved for the purpose of
lactogenesis in the U.S. In another article on galactogogues,Gabay (2002)
refers to the use of some other agents that I have not seen mentioned on
this site such as: Thyrotrophin-releasing hormone, growth hormone,
and fenugreek. I would appreciate any input from anyone having experience
with these other agents and their effectiveness. I also could not find any
information on usage rates of domperidone in the United States and would
like to know how common it is for a women experiencing inadequate milk
production to be prescribed this drug.
Thank You,
Erica Gourneau
