Hi all,

This is VERY last minute, as I/we need info IMMEDIATELY for a meeting
tomorrow (Thursday).

The brief explanation is this: There is a group here in Missouri, headed
up by SIDS Resources, Inc., and backed by researcher Dr. Thach (who has
recently published his data "proving" co-sleeping is dangerous) to
develop policies and possibly legislation PROHIBITING co-sleeping, even
by BF mothers! Several of us on the pro-BF/co-sleeping "side" came to
the last meeting, & made a little headway in the argument that
prohibiting co-sleeping wouldn't STOP it, but would tie our hands as
professionals from being able to teach SAFE co-sleeping. We brought
statements from Jim McKenna and Jodi Mindell (member of the Natl. Infant
Sleep Foundation) to back us up.

The group as a whole was in agreeement that room sharing is safe, & even
Dr. Thach acknowledged that "It's okay for a mother to BF baby in bed,
but she shouldn't fall asleep w/baby". Those of us who are LCs & LLLLs
pointed out that the very act of BF early on puts mom to sleep, & that
it was unreasonable to tell new BF moms that they would be "criminals"
if they fell asleep while BF.

We just received a request to bring research that supports the hormonal
connection of mothers/babies, and the sleep-inducing effects of
breastfeeding. We've been in touch with McKenna & Linda Smith (who's
fighting a similar battle in Ohio---Thanks, Linda!!!!), and have emailed
Dr. Sears. We still need research specific to the hormonal questions,
though.

Can any of you help? If you don't have the whole article to email
([log in to unmask]) or fax (314-842-9134) to me, the citation
and an abstract would be a good start.

Prayers will also help!

TIA,

Carol
