About 25 years ago when my son was born, I didn't get a shot of pitocin and had, in fact negotiated not to have that given routinely. However I was bleeding rather briskly (not quite a hemorrhage but a biggish loss), and agreed that since time and feeding baby hadn't worked, something needed to happen. Instead of pitocin I got ergonovine (?). Didn't know it would make my gut (from stomach to the other end) cramp all night. Instead of curling up with baby and sleeping I walked the floor in agony.
The point: sometimes intervention is necessary. It's a lot nicer if it's with a drug you know won't bother you than with one that you don't know your reaction to.
