Kathleen says,
*************************************
I believe that Jack Newman MD has a good piece on this at
www.breastfeedingonline.com, how to know if your baby is getting enough.
Brick dust urine means that the baby is needing more fluids, and that
breastfeeding is about to take off well if things are up and running,
latch good, all systems go. Where is the evidence that it means that
there is pathology?
***************************************
When I was in nursing school, at least 100 years ago, brick dust urine was
fairly common and dismissed. These were all babies that were formula fed and
(theoretically at least) were getting plenty of fluids. There is nothing to
indicate that this is pathology, as Kathleen points out, particularly in the
first few days of life. If it happened a week or two out, I'd want to evaluate
the baby thoroughly, but there is NO NEED TO SUPPLEMENT a two day old baby who
has "brick dust" urine.

BTW, the first time I called it that to the peds I work with, he hadn't a
clue as to what I was talking about. What DO they teach these young things in
med school nowadays???

Jan Barger -- whose son Tim is studying in Spain this semester. My prayers
are with the many families that lost loved ones in the 3/11 attack.
