Thank you Denny for taking the higher road in this discussion. (And I'm
glad I read through all the accumulated digests before responding myself.)
To me, any surreptitious means for keeping people from reading what we
disagree with is highly UNprofessional, legal or not. Just think of the
chaos if everyone tried to hide books they disagree with. What if people
with one particular religious view tried to hide any books that didn't agree
with their position? What if "anti-home schooling" groups hid all the books
about teaching your child at home or if the "pro-home schoolers" tried to
hide anything praising the public education system? I'm sure you can think
of many such examples. I even wonder about the wisdom of asking that books
such as the 2 BWs not be on the shelves is a professional approach. It does
smack of censorship. Certainly, we should make sure there is at least a
balance. If only the "this way is the only right way" books are offered,
then there is definitely reason to object.
It sounded to me like the situation described was one of those special
feature displays the store is always doing either featuring some new book, a
particular author, or a specific subject. In this case, it would be
appropriate to voice one's concern about the negative impact of these books
and perhaps request that they also set up a display of attachment parenting
books. Remember, the general public still sees feeding and parenting as
strictly matters of "choice" and while we keep trying to get feeding seen as
a health decision rather than lifestyle, we also have to deal with the
present. If one were to get a bookstore to make a feature display on
breastfeeding and/or attachment parenting, there would likely be requests
for feature displays with other viewpoints.
