Milk fever really is supposed to refer to a phenomena related to fever
and the milk coming in, and often times some related engorgement.

Convulsing chills with lactogenesis...... With each of my 4 babies, I
definitely experienced a postpartum phenomena, but I think it took a
week or two before it really set in. Gosh, it's been so long that it's
hard for me to remember the exact timing! What I do remember is that I
became *extremely* susceptible to chill. Getting out of bed in the
middle of the night to get baby from the cradle, or even walking outside
in the early evening to put away toys in the back yard, could set it
off. I would go into violent chatters and shaking that made me run for
the nearest blanket. I remember getting halfways into my back yard with
my fourth baby when it started to hit. I ran inside, grabbed the quilt
off my daughter's bed, rolled myself up in it and collapsed in a huddle
in my living room, unable to make it even to my own bed because that
would make more air hit me and magnify the effect. The chills and
convulsing would be violent at first, then gradually wind down, lasting
15-30 min followed by extreme sensitivity to recurrence the next few
hours. When it happened at night, the slightest movement of my husband
in bed that allowed even a little bit of air under the covers would send
me into more fits; he had to stay absolutely still for me to recover.

This propensity to very violent chills lasted several weeks and only
gradually diminished. I always assumed it was hormonal changes. Each of
us experiences the transition from pregnancy to lactation/non-pregnancy
differently. When I told my doctor about it, he was of the opinion that
I must have been sick, but I knew I wasn't because there was a timing
and pattern to it and it repeated with each baby. I have no idea what my
temperature patterns were at the time because I never checked.
