Nikki reports:
"Baby breastfeeds poorly on one side, hurting her. She feels that is from
the torticollis. She has approached me for craniosacral therapy."
Has she tried positioning baby differently? When newborns would have
bruising on one side and showed obvious signs of having a headache, I
frequently found that they were more comfortable using cradle on one side
and football on the other. We would keep the "sore" side facing upward
rather than having baby lay with that side down and they usually did much
better. (I would also use this approach when baby would refuse one side.
Start in football hold on the side baby liked and "sneak" him to the other
side in cross cradle. They often didn't "realize" they had been switched.)
Whenever a mom would have a challenge with one side I would always point out
that the bottom line/worst case scenario where baby never took the one side
did not mean she couldn't nurse. It was always possible to nurse one-sided.
Even if I was quite certain we would get baby to nurse on both, I frequently
found that once moms realized it wasn't a case of "both sides or throw in
the towel", she would relax and often that was a big step in helping her
work through whatever the challenge was.
