No monkey-wrench, your input is appreciated. It brings us back to the
origins of the discussion. The concern that supplementing with iron
enriched formula might be more risky than non enriched formula. I am
trying to figure out what is the best recommendation, based on research.
The nutritionist and I feel non enriched formula due to the increased iron
absorption likely in a infant receiving regular breastmilk feeding. Some
staff say no it must be iron enriched formula due to the increased loss of
iron when combining breastmilk feeds with formula feeds. Does anyone know
of research which might give us some guidance?
Regarding the container vs stomach discussion I think it has to do with
time... it doesn't spend as much time in the stomach as it does sitting in
a bottle. You are trying tor reduce the risk, not eliminate it, always
assuming there actually IS a risk.
The possibility of totally breastmilk and then totally formula feeds isn't
a long term option for moms dealing with chronic low supply due to breast
surgery. I would not want to put their supply in any more jeopardy but
reducing the frequency or length of time the infant spends at the breast.
Skipping feeds or even alternating feeds with pumping would be detrimental.
These are not ill infants who are inefficient at milk removal.
In case you are wondering, most of these women go to great efforts to
maximize their milk supply. They try everything and go the extra mile. I am
always so impressed by their dedication and persistence. The sad part is
almost all of them were assured the surgery would not have any impact on
their ability to breast feed. They are often dealing with feelings of guilt
and anger.
