There is iron in the formula, just not in as high a quantity as the 'iron
fortified' .
I think the infant did not tolerate the iron fortified very well.
However my major question is to find the reference for the understanding
that once formula is introduced the bioavailability of iron is reduced.
This seems counterintuitive... There is a very tiny amount of iron in
breastmilk. There IS lactoferrin present which should increase the
bioavailability. In a situation where the infant is not receiving
overwhelming amounts of iron with it's concurrent risks would the amount
absorbed from the formula not be higher than if the child was not receiving
breastmilk?
