This discussion reminds me of how American I have become. When I grew up in Australia if you wanted to hold some one's baby you would ask " Oh can I nurse him / her"? meaning just to hold the baby in your lap (and perhaps feed it the bottle). Now of course since living in the US nursing a baby is synonomous with breastfeeding and I would certainly do a double-take if I heard a man or a child ask if they could "nurse" the baby.
Not having lived in Oz for 22 years perhaps you Aussies back home can tell me if people still nurse their babies just by holding them.
