I think information is only 1 factor. The other is attitude, both in moms and
in society.
As long as one says: "I know breast is best, but ..." knowing is just that:
knowing with brains. The rest is emotion. Emotion can only be changed with
attitude. Both governing bodies and health care providers must change attitude and
see bf as the health item it is, like they do with vacinations, smoking and
car seats, instead of as a lifestyle choice as is now in many industrialised
countries.
In Belgium a government campaig on carsafety for children runs with numerous
billboards. On it is a birthdaycake with 6 candles. Text says: "Tom (or
another boysname, not sure), 6 years. For ever." Very hard and confronting. No
remote sense of being afraid of making parents of children that died in car
accident feel guilty. In many countries parents are being scared to death if they
even consider putting baby on his belly for sleep. No consideration whatsoever
for parents of a SIDS victim. In The Netherlands parents that will not vaccinate
or vaccinate in others ways then the governmental guidelines advice are
publicly named antisocial. You all, dear friends, probably will have some examples
from anywhere around the world that illustrate the same.
Breastfeeding campaignes (sp?) can be delayed or altered by AIM manufaturer's
big bucks, AIM manufacturers can pay for pediatricians reference text books,
governments can set food information agencies (that are partly funded bij
dairy industry, that is greatly financially supported by European Union money) in
charge of breastfeeding campaignes.
And we wonder why moms don't bother to choose to breastfeed their children
...

well, getting off of my soapbox on this bright sunny morning.

Warmly greeting,
