I am a hospital based LC in a hospital that does about 1100 deliveries a
year. I have a Mom who has exclusively breastfed 4 other children. She now has a
1 week old child that has a unilateral cleft palate and lip. This infant
actively tries to latch on but cannot create a good seal to stay latched. Mom is
pumping and not yet producing enough so she is supplementing.( This is probably
her biggest issue ). We are working on increasing supply. Baby has not
gained since DC but also has not lost any more. Mom has appt. with a specialists 3
hours away next week. I called the LC there and found out that surgeon is
not supportive of breastfeeding. I need some help with resources for this Mom.
Someone who has been in shoes. She is so tired.
Do I encourage her to concentrate on milk supply and provide lots of skin to
skin? She is spending a lot of time trying to get what nourishment she can
into infant.
Jane
