Dr. Elizabeth Coryllos does the quick snip with infants and toddlers,
and even some school age children. She uses a topical anesthetic
(benzocaine gel) and a grooved director (a tool to lift the tongue) and
snips the frenulum close to the underside of the tongue with blunt
Metzenbaum scissors. If there is a blood vessel in the frenulum, then
the child needs cautery or sutures above and below the incision line.
She is at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, Long Island, NY.
