Correction to: "Soft drinks that contain citric and phosphoric acid
can decrease the absorption of calcium. A 12-ounce cola may rob the
body of 100 milligrams of calcium."

Actually, soft drinks containing phosphoric acid increase the
resorption of calcium from the bone. This is different from not
absorbing calcium from one's meal--it's actually MORE of a problem.
Our bones act as a reservoir of calcium, and when we take in a large
dose of phosphorous, our body is forced to respond by releasing
calcium from the bones to keep the calcium:phosphorus levels in
balance in the bloodstream.

For young women, a diet containing a certain amount of soda could
prevent the laying down of sufficient calcium in the bones; for an
older woman, it means an accelerated loss of irreplaceable calcium
from the bones.
