Wise Ones:
Given: 1)that the exam is in a multiple choice format; 2)the exam is meant
to apply to situations world-wide; and 3)the controversy surrounding Vit D
supplementation for breastfed babies here in the US, how would an exam
candidate be expected to answer a question about the BEST Vit D source (for
a breastfed infant older than 2 or 3 months) if two of the choices
included a) routine supplementation w/Vit D and b)synthesis by the skin in
the presence of sunlight? While this question may never even come up on the
exam, I am, admittedly, totally confused about the viewpoint that the
IBLCE, or ILCA may have. Is there a clear professional opinion here in the
US? Does a world-wide view exist? Please, someone wiser, could you clear my
confusion for me? And please comment on what a board certified LC (here in
the US) would professionally be expected to do if a client asked for advice
in this situation. Are we mandated to follow the AAP position or is it a
violation of the Standards of Practice to neglect to provide clients with
enough information to make informed decisions? I am Niki, a totally
confused exam candidate, and would sincerely appreciate advice on this
topic.
