I had to comment on this. The way information was conveyed was very
diplomatic.
This situation happens way too often in way too many places. Sometimes it
depends on the staff on duty, who the doctor is and which way the wind is
blowing. We have plenty of information to support the RIGHT thing to do, which is to
leave it alone. The old fears of mom passing something to baby via 7-14 mLs of
colostrum (which is designed to pass immunity and antibodies) apparently over
come any good sense (like baby was in utero until very recently and exposed
to whatever it is that mom "has".) Many times those post c/s or post delivery
temp spikes are a result of moms hydration levels or the physicological
response of giving birth. And mom and baby are unnecessarily separated and subjected
to tests that are un-needed and a waste of time and money! Ruth Lawrence's
paper from NMCH (1999) is a good listing of what is and isn't a reason to
contradict or resrict breastfeeding. Always good to use MD to MD educational
materials.
OK off my soap box,
