Possibly, I'm assuming both you & your partner have
evaluated her latch & positioning, plus as it's mom's
4th baby I think she'd have a good idea if that was
the problem.

>>It's her 4th baby, she also has IBS.
She has been told to "just wean" and this will make
all her symptoms go
away, but she said she doesn't want to.<<

Has a HCP told her the IBS (does this mean "Irritable
Bowel Syndrome") will be alleviated by weaning? How
so? I have IBS myself, and can't see what link it
would have to breastfeeding. If someone has more
information, I'd love for them to share it. I *do*
know if I eat certain foods, I find my IBS is
aggravated. Is she thinking there are special dietary
rules to follow with BFing that may be exacerbating
her IBS? I'd check into that area as far as the IBS
is concerned. Dairy foods and other things that I'm
allergic to cause me distress. Another similar
condition is Oral-Allergy Syndrome which is not
considered true food allergy but an intolerance to a
food or food additive that can cause oral itching,
indigestion & possible diarrhea & cramping.

Her pain cycle from her nipples could possibly worsen
her IBS as there are links to stress level, but since
this mother is dedicated to BFing weaning is unlikely
to ease her distress. It'll just give her one other
reason to be upset.

Sincerely,
Linda A. Madsen, RN, IBCLC
Plano, Texas
