Judy, thank you for the link to the article.

In Foxfire 2, a collection of Southern mountain folklore the midwives tell
about the measures they took to save mothers and babies during and after
birth.  Some of the midwives said that they would give the baby catnip tea
to clear up the liver. "And if you don't they'll get yeller lookin.'"

Perhaps catnip tea has similar properties to the Chinese herbs.

One midwife also said that the doctors started giving shots "t'hurry them
up.  But with the first baby they always need t'take all th'time they
need.  If they took a lot of time, it wouldn't injure'em." nowhere."
