I, also, am annoyed that the companies are trying so hard to market
them to "prevent" soreness. I have seen this with the marketers of
the purified lanolin products as well. I have stubbornly refused to
go along with any attempts to promote tham as preventative. I have
resisted having gels as "floor stock" in OB even though there are a
few legitimate times they might be helpful and the LC is not there
(we didn't cover 24/7, just 8/7). I fear that nurses will start
handing them out right and left instead of looking at why a mom is
reporting soreness. This is what's happened with Lansinoh (at least
it isn't the yellow tube, less refined kind of lanolin they used to
hand out). It is part of the prn (as needed) standing orders for
nursing moms. Nurses are giving it our whether mom has a problem or
not rather than GIVING it prn . Rather than telling a mom to USE it
prn they are telling her to "put it on after nursing to prevent
soreness" ARRGGHH! This tells moms to expect soreness and, IMO
makes mom more likely to give up if they get sore "in spite of" the
ointment rather than seeking assistance in finding the source and
correcting it.
