NABA's publication, Executive Summary: Selling Out Mothers and Babies,
contains a quote from a Ross Employee Manual that pretty well sums up how nurses are
viewed by industry:
"Never underestimate the role of nurses. If they are sold and serviced
properly, they can be strong allies. A nurse who supports Ross is like another
salesman."
Current data does not support the need to supplement pregnant and lactating
women with DHA. This product is another marketing tactic to plant seeds of
doubt in breastfeeding women so they will buy a product they don't need (creating
a market where none existed before). Taking the nurses out to dinner is meant
to circumvent any vendor policies in hospitals, as well as to "service" the
nurses. Buying the support of nurses is important to make sure they will support
the use of the company's product. Nurses who fall for this silliness cheapen
the profession. I suggest that when this traveling dog and pony show comes to
your hospital that you post this quote so that the nurses know where they
really stand and how they are viewed by industry.
