Crystal asked about a quote from an old Ross employee manual. The quote is
one that I have printed in NABA's Executive Summary of Selling Out Mothers and
Babies. The quote is as follows: "Never underestimate the role of nurses. If
they are sold and serviced properly, they can be strong allies. A nurse who
supports Ross is like another salesman." I find this a very telling opinion of
nurses on the part of a formula company. Give them food, trinkets, little biased
in-services and they will do your work for you. Some nurses have become
walking billboards for formula and in the process are no longer able to advocate for
their patients. One of the prime ethical duties we owe our patients is
fidelity. We owe our allegiance to our patients, not to commercial interests.
Fidelity is what is supposed to keep patients safe from commercial pressures to make
unhealthy choices. Veracity, or the trust our patients place in us to fully
inform them is what leads to their right of autonomy or informed decision
making. I think some of this has been lost down the slippery slope of phony fatty
acids.
