Nancy, aren't you here in Michigan?
In my experience, babies from births like this (or moms who get lots of IV fluid) often show a weight loss on "paper" but are clinically fine. I recall one recently: baby was nursing well after the initial problems with latch d/t edemetous breast/nipple/areolar tissue) but had great output (stools and urine) and no clinical signs of dehydration. Sometimes they just have to get rid of that extra fluid, the same as mom.
Remember that pitocin makes the IV fluid stay around longer (there is a more scientific explanation but to save time and effort, let's just say that) and sometimes takes a little longer for a Postpartum fluid shift. I would assess the baby, the feedings (latch, etc) and the output before telling mom to supplement. But I do know how different it is for those in Public Health to catch a mom in the first few days so sometimes you are left to clean up the "mess" from the hospital. Thanks!!
