Valerie,
You wonder if someone did the math wrong on the can of Nan because it
looks like a one-pound can, but the label says 12 oz. I have seen
manufacturers pull this stunt frequently over the years (many foods, not just ABM). They
keep using the same size package, but put less in it, knowing that many
people do not read labels. They *may* drop the price a little, leading the
unsuspecting consumer to think they are now getting a savings, but the price drop
does not equal the volume drop, so people are actually paying more per ounce (or
serving or whatever) than they were before. All perfectly legal because they
put the correct weight on the label, so it doesn't matter how misleading the
size of the package is.
So my guess is that indeed these moms are only getting 12 oz. of
powdered formula, packed in a can that could hold 16 oz. if the manufacturer felt
like filling it all the way. Oh, and I'm also sure there is probably a note
somewhere to this effect: "Package may not appear full due to settling of
contents." Another perfectly legal yet terribly misleading phrase to keep the
manufacturer off the hook and the consumer confused.
