It's what we have in common that is critical. I believe that it's important
to be inclusive - some of us have different interests and skills, but the
challenge is to work together towards the same goals. Those who undermine
breastfeeding (in many ways) will enjoy nothing better on this public list
than to see divisions and attempts to isolate individuals or topics.
The breastfeeding movement needs people taking on different causes - some
advocacy can seem negative, and be tough on the individual. I recently
listened to a wonderful interview with Dr Bill Caldicott, long-time peace
activist, in which he spoke of the inherent negativism in advocacy, the
focus of his life for 30 years. He said that the negativity (and beating
one's head against brick walls etc..) was offset by knowing that one was
doing the right thing.. and that ultimately this would be proven. [ICEA once
invited his former wife, Dr Helen Caldicott to be keynote speaker, quite a
political statement, but the audience gave her a standing ovation, an
overwhelming response from people who appreciated that some work in
different ways, but all for a better world.]
I skim through Lactnet, and read and archive those posts that interest me,
there's always the delete button.
There's another cause right now that could do with help from us - I haven't
seen it mentioned on Lactnet (off topic, I know, but mothers will have lost
babies, babies their mothers, and there's no clean water !). More than 125
000 deaths from the tsunami north of Indonesia, and millions of people have
lost their homes and livelihood. The Indonesian Govt has stopped counting
for the moment. There are special funds within aid agencies like UNICEF,
Oxfam, Care International.
Best wishes to all..
