Subject: Re: Putting suck training into perspective
I agree with several ho have written, especially what Lisa had to say today.
"Suck training" or finger feeding is only one of the tools available to us.
Think of it as a tool. Cup feeding is a tool, as is using a syringe or a
eye droppper or <gasp> a bottle. Sometimes you just ned to get food into a
baby quickly - cup works great. Sometimes you need to help a baby learn to
suck so s/he can do that at the breast.
Depends on the situtaion, what's wrong, parent's comfort level, etc. It all
looks so easy when we do it :-( (You know - how the baby always gets on
when we are in th room ...... :-(
I think it's best to keep an open mind, learn lots of tools and know when to
use which. And not always use the same thing for all babies. Don't be in a
rut, keep an open mind, see what fits, what works, what doesn't. It's about
your comfort level too. Pat in SNJ
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly, Pat. We often use cup feeding, we go with what
works for the parents. There are a multitude of factors to consider. And
yes, folks do go home and get overwhelmed by some interventions. We need to
work with the whole family and help them do the best they can for their baby.
