Thank you for sending us this reference! It is a very helpful thing for
expectant mothers to know, especially if it is combined with the
information that "crying is a late sign of hunger; responding to a
baby's earlier cues is facilitated by having the baby close to the
mother's body at all times." Many breastfeeding mothers only realize
that mothering practices vary (among individuals as well as cultures)
when people comment on the fact that their babies "never cry."
I still feel ill when I read that "babies in the control group cried x
number of *hours* per day; babies who were held cried two hours less per
day." Whatever those figures are, they are painfully high. Are there
statistics on duration of crying in breastfed / non-breastfed babies?
