This is a reply from JoAnne Scott regarding Tenet #25 of the IBLCE Code of Ethics.
Ann Calandro, RNC, IBCLC
Valerie and Chris use examples and make points that I do not think any IBCLC could disagree with. However, there is still a basic misunderstanding of the meaning of the word "respect." Perhaps this analogy will help: After seeing the televised reports of the 400,000 person demonstration against President Bush in New York, over the weekend, I realized that one can respect the office of the presidency while working like heck to oust the current incumbent. Similarly, one can respect the concept of intellectual property rights while working like heck to remove certain specific substances from patentable substances lists. Please continue your crusade against the patenting of human milk components. That will not put you in violation of Tenet 25.
JoAnne Scott
Executive Director, IBLCE
