least 4 hrs because 'it takes that long for them to warm after their bath" !!
I
made fast enemies with the postpartum nurse manager at my current job by
reacting in disbelief (on my first day!) to this statement on her hospital
tour-I
really thought she was kidding! AFter witnessing the look of horror on my face
she exclaimed "the mother doesn't want the baby until its been bathed-she
thinks its yucky" I have SINCE mentioned that any bathing procedure that
requires 4hrs to stabilize temp is faulty and too stressful.... but it is
falling on
deaf ears!
I believe it was Molly Piesel (spelling?) who spoke about the practices in
most hospitals which interfere with getting breastfeeding off to a good start
and the newborn bath was certainly one of them. I have incorporated her
information into my childbirth education classes to give parents some research-based
info to help them to make informed decisions. Most of the stuff done to
newborns is not evidence based.
