Hi Cheryl --
The ultimate solution would be for some enterprising souls to do and publish research on effects of IV fluids on breastfeeding initiation -- in an OB journal where the ones who need to know it can read it!

in the meantime, what I've found to work best is Reverse Pressure Softening. Author Jean Cotterman has an article coming out I think in the next JHL about it. Write to Jean at <[log in to unmask]> for particulars. RPS is quick, it's simple, and it WORKS! Can eliminate the need for nipple shields on many a flat and edematous areola. I use and teach it to nearly every mom I work with in my busy hospital setting.

We have the problem back in our hospital: Inductions! Not only does
this lead to long labors, exhausted mothers and frequently, traumatized
babies, but it is the overwhelming fluid load that really causes
problems with breastfeeding. These breasts are engorged and nipples
flattened. Any latch is painful due to the fluid pressure and pumping
seldom brings forth colostrum release.
I have missed a lot of chatter on Lactnet over the last year due to
illness (my own) and I know this was discussed, but I can't
remember---is there a solution? (I mean, besides forbidding inductions).
