Greetings--
I have been informed by a local LC that she received a call last year
from a mother who was also very concerned that her preemie was given
another
mother's milk (it was the same hospital).
The mother of the preemie wrote a letter to the hospital;
in the words of the LC: "They blew her off."
The most obvious item of concern here is that the hospital
in question, at the very least, must re-evaluate its procedures.
My questions--how often does this happen? How many
times are babies accidentally given anothers milk and not
informed of the switch?
I agree--mother's who are pumping milk for the baby are very
unlikey to be KNOWINGLY actively positive for any kind of virus; but
what about the fathers of these babies?
If this were my child, I would want full cooperation from the hospital.
Yes, I know that by raising a question about the hospital policy
as to how they handle BM could make thing very difficult for other
mothers/babies; but I don't think "sticking one's head in the sand"
is the proper way to handle this obvious problem.
The biggest overriding issue here is that this hospital, and I'm
sure many others, do not take BFing, BM, etc., seriously!
(No news flash to members here.)
Breastmilk can and is just as critical as a hospital's blood supply.
There are detailed procedures in place that are followed to the letter
for the hospital's blood supply--the same should be true for EBM!
I could go on; but enough from me.
Kathy
