I guess I'm too simple minded....but when I teach a newborn care class or
prenatal breastfeeding class, I explain infant weight loss as not all due to "not
getting enough to eat." Babies come out of the womb full of fluid, like a
sponge soaking in a bucket of water and some of that weight loss is evaporation.
That's why their little wrists, hands, and skin is dry after the first few
days. I notice this most on babies who "bake" under the radiant heaters for
longer than I think they should be (Oh, they're cold from their bath....is what I
hear. Take the baby to mom for skin to skin, that'll warm 'em up...is what I
reply.) So the extra fluid they get from mom's IV via the placenta needs to
come out via urine and stool.
Too bad it has to be so focused on numbers.
