Don't know if there is any relation here.  The article says that the children developed large heads.  There is a disease in horses known as "big head disease" which is caused by a phosphorus-calcium imbalance, too much phosphorus and not enough calcium. I believe it causes the bones in the head to be replaced by some kind of connective tissue.  Usually caused by an unbalanced diet, sometimes too much bran.  This formula probably was deficient in many minerals as well as protein, perhaps even differing from batch to batch.  If a baby was receiving other nutrition, perhaps the symptoms would take a while to emerge, whereas a very young baby exclusively fed on this formula might die rather quickly.

So tragic. And unnecessary.
