Hello to all.
I have a question about the injection of Cardiolite (radioactive isotope) for parathyroid screening. Mom was told that she must discontinue breastfeeding for 2 days following the scan. The information she received from the lab tech is that the injection will contain TC99M Cardiolite. I have searched the internet and found the same information--2 days weaning. Mother has postponed the scan for 3 months (her baby is currently 13 months old), but her doctor doesn't want to wait any longer than that.
In the previous edition of the Breastfeeding Answer Book it states (page 519):
*99M-Technitium MIBI -- no suspension of breastfeeding needed (Rubow, 1991).
*99-Technitium MAA -- suspend breastfeeding for 6 to 36 hours. (AAP Committee on Drugs 1994; Rose 1990).
What I cannot find is whether or not this Cardiolite is MIBI or MAA. Does anyone know if it is available both forms or only one? A call to the lab didn't help. Can anyone shed light on this?
This mother would like breastfeeding suspension to be as minimal as possible, but of course, doesn't want to pose any unnecessary risks on her baby either.
Thank you in advance for any information.
Sincerely,
Sherii Hickingbottom, LLL
