I wonder if we should start a list of situations in which toddlers nurse
more often than they usually do...
Here are some that mothers I work with and I have noticed, to add to
Teresa's suggestions of unwell or stressful.
1) When mother is on the phone (either because she's actually sitting
for more than 30 sec. or because she is talking about breastfeeding to
another mother)
2) At gatherings where other mothers are breastfeeding their babies or
toddlers
3) When mother is spending more time outside of the home or on other
activities
4) When baby / toddler is going through a development "leap" -- I am
rethinking the whole growth spurt thing, because so many babies wake
frequently during the night to practice sitting up, standing up, talk...
5) In a new environment, particularly a group environment with children
who are unfamiliar (playgroup, etc.)
6) When mother has mentioned the "W" word :-)

Jo-Anne Elder-Gomes, LLLL, IBCLC and mother of six now-weaned (as in,
yes, it does happen!) previously bf children :-) and a seventh who may
or may not have...
