Breastfeeding is no contraindication to any immunisation (except,
debatably, smallpox); however, close contacts of severely
immunocompromised people do have some contraindications - eg live oral
polio vaccine. Perhaps the NICU staff are worried that the live virus
vaccine may spread to affect very ill neonates? However, rubella
vaccine is not in this category:
"Breast feeding is not a contraindication to vaccination. Although a
woman can excrete rubella vaccine virus in breast milk and transmit the
virus to her infant, the infection remains asymptomatic. " [snip]
Measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is not contraindicated for the close
contacts of immunocompromised persons."
