A couple years back there was a survey done at our hospital on
infant feeding attitudes and opinions. Answers were given in a
Rickert (sp?) scale (range from strongly disagree to strongly
agree). One statement to be responded to was; "We should not make
moms feel guilty about their feeding choice." Administration was
very upset that the response from LCs (we were identified by
category, not by name) was further in the "disagree" direction than
any of the floor staff. Immediately, they were berating us for
saying "moms should be made to feel guilty". No matter how hard we
tried, we could not get them to see that the latter isn't the same
as the original statement. We tended to disagree because we
understood how that statement is twisted to mean "don't give them
all the info". We were trying to make the point that fear of guilt
shouldn't prevent us from giving moms ALL the facts. This haunted
us for years, and as a result, I refused to answer any further
surveys since I learned that in spite of assurances of anonimity,
what you say can and will be held against you in a future
evaluation!
When we say that "guilt" is a red herring and that concern about
guilt should not mean we withhold information, it does NOT mean that
we are saying we "should" make moms feel guilty for not
breastfeeding. What the mom "chooses" to feel isn't something
someone else causes them to feel.
