Yes, you can refer to an OT as far as I know; I think it is a =
"lateral" referral i.e. on the same professional level as LC, but we =
can't refer to say a neurosurgeon or some such specialist; am I right on =
this, everyone??
I believe you can refer to anyone you want. In our hosp. based out patient
clinic we often refer to a dermatologist. And about 6 months ago I had a mom
referred to the Lactation Center by her OB with a "plugged duct" post antibiotic
treatment for mastitis. She had a hockey puck sized red mass on the outer
aspect of her breast that was like no plugged duct I had ever seen. She reported
that it had been ultrasounded and was not an abscess. I called the OB to tell
him that it was not a plugged duct and he refused to do anything more since
the surgeon in his clinic had read the ultrasound as normal. I then referred her
to a breast surgeon (who had formerly been one of our patients). She saw the
mom immediately and proceeded to drain 1/2 cup of pus from the "plugged
duct". Moral to the story:
1. We sometimes need to make a referral to get our moms properly cared for.
2. An abscess doesn't always show up on ultrasound.
3. And, finally, this mom had a PPO so could "self refer" and still get
insurance coverage. If she had had an HMO I'm not sure she could have gotten
insurance coverage without a referral from her primary doc or clinic.
I know of no reason that an LC cannot make a referral to anyone, however.
Oh, and the surgeon sent a report back to the OB and one to me.
