Robyn,
My husband is active duty and I have worked with many active duty moms. I
think area has a lot to do with it--how supportive---I find the military rates
tend to mimic the civilian rates in the areas. The moms I work with have
succeeded I believe due to a supportive work environment--#1. I know one
officer who breastfed for the "long term." Her husband was once active duty, but
then became a stay at home dad. Another mom I know--her supervisor was the
husband of my co-Leader--she had a lot of support from him.
I would say being deployed is the biggest concern. Moms in the medical
field--as in the civilian medical field normally work longer shifts and are lucky
to get a break--so they usually have a harder time.
The mission always comes first, but I think if the mother's work environment
is supportive, she would be quite successful.
