Dear Kate and all!
Kate you suggest that others may think you are""breastfeeding advocates who lack objectivity", yikes you state you have a degrees in Biochemistry and Biology, please do not sell yourself short.Sounds like you are a mother and a scientist! Your perspective and insights could go far!
Here are some more ideas
1."a letter to Tommy Thompson, or to the Office of Womens Health, to support the Campaign in its original form, pls do it NOW so that they know the issue has not gone away."
Because it won't
Anne Merewood
Boston MEdical Center
ps there are sample letters on the ILCA website.
http://www.ilca.org/news/sampleletter.php
imagine if he recieved 2000 letters a month!!! one from each of you!
2. Create events to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, IBCLC Day (luncheon, picnic, reception free baby fair etc.)
3. Local breastfeeding groups can give awards and recognition to breastfeeding friendly people and businesses in your community -best employer, HCP BF supporters, best agency-WIC, PHN, best BFF politician, newspaper. and honor them
4. Send Thank you cards
After a consult
For a referral
After a refusal
After getting great service
For helping you
For being a customer
5., Here are some suggestions for Writing articles for publications for ease of publication and readability
Write "List" articles List articles are more popular with readers
"10 Ways to survive the first 10 days after delivery"
Limit to 1,500 words (1-2 sides of 8 ½ by 11 paper)
Make a practice list of articles - this list could be endless!
"The 10 best things you can do for your baby"
"10 simple things you should know about infants"
"10 ways to tell if a baby is happy"
( all of these ideas could take a Breastfeeding slant!)
Below is a resourc of all the possible places to send articles:
Bacon's Publicity Checker
Bacon's Publishing Company
332 S. Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60604
(312) 922-2400
This guide includes contact information for 1,591 daily newspapers, 13,848 weekly newspapers and 9,677 trade/consumer magazines and newsletters. Bacon's also provides lists for radio and television stations. There are approx 25,000 listings
6. Public Speaking, Plan-Create 15-30 minute presentations that can be given over lunch/breakfast- the same type of list topics as suggested above can be given to women groups, church groups, parenting groups, even Health Care Provider Groups,(bring food and candy also)
7. Television and Radio exposure can be positive experiences, I have been on public radio and commercial TV and it has gone well. When I was invited to participate in a local talk show the female interviewers first statements to me were about their lack of positive breastfeeding experiences, one had adopted her children, the other had experienced the sore nipple lack of qualified help scenario. I changed the potentially difficult situation into a positive one by stressing that they did the best that they could in those situations and no one could or should every judge them. By acknowledging their experiences then, and honoring their ability as loving mothers, no matter how they fed their babies, we were able to move on with the interview and had a positive experience and promote breastfeeding for todays new mothers! The show was well received and even was repeated on several occasions.
8. Join ILCA - you do not need to be an IBCLC - then offer to volunteer and get involved! 30 min a month! We could use help do continue to develop content and resources on the web site.
I feel so strongly that YOU are the power of change - put your best foot forward imagine if each of us made a resolution to do 1 breastfeeding advocacy thing a month over the next year - WOW
Mothers have as powerful an influence over the welfare of future generations as all other earthly causes combined.
