I agree with Pamela that doing a single pre-post weight check with
one feeding doesn't really give the overall picture. It would be
like looking at one or two frames of a movie and thinking it will
tell us what the entire film is. However, we don't always have the
luxury of having a mom check weights with every feeding over 24
hours and in some cases, mom would be so overwhelmed with the
process it might be the final straw that leads to her quitting.
When I would do a pre/post check during an outpatient consult, I
would always point out to the mom that it is only a "snapshot". I
would ask her if this feeding was typical of most feedings and how
it may differ. I might ask something like, "How many feedings each
day would you say go like this one did? Are they typically longer?
shorter? baby more or less satisfied after? more or less
comfortable for you?" In this way I can then use this information
WITH the weights to help work out an evaluation of the problem and
develop a plan with the mom, dad, HCP etc.
