Saturday I worked with a lovely baby 2 hours old. The baby was
breastfeeding well but the RN tested the baby and the level was 36 - so in
came the formula, even though the ped group of the baby and the parents did
not wish this to happen. <
I just attended a talk on the near term baby and was told that ALL babies
drop their blood sugars between 1-3 hours old and then they go up again. So
blood sugars should be tested prior to 1 hour old and after 3 hours old.
I have asked for this reference because I will need it in hand when I go to
our hospital group. Have others on this list heard of this? Do you have
policies that address this?
I also agree that parents have the right in decisions. I am not advocating
harming a baby but parents need to be in the decision process.
